Surfing (In Tamarindo)
Costa Rica is renowned to be home to some of the best surfing waves in the world where you can enjoy a surfing experience in the warm Pacific waters no matter your skill level. Beautiful beaches and clean surf breaks dot the coastline of Tamarindo offering both amateurs and experts some of the finest surfing anywhere, it’s time to experience Costa Rica’s famous surf breaks and learn why Costa Rica is a top surfing destination! Below are some surfing hotspots:

• The beach right in the center of Tamarindo offers good surf conditions also for beginners to learn on. Surf is best during mid-high tide.

• Across from the Tamarindo rivermouth is Playa Grande which has the most consistent waves in the area.

• 1 km south of Tamarindo is Playa Langosta where a right and left point break comes up fast and curls off the estuary of the Rio San Francisco.

• The next great surf spot is Avellanas, also nicknamed “Little Hawaii”. Surf is good low and high tide with beach breaks featuring very hollow rights and lefts. To reach Avellanas you can drive 16 km from Tamarindo via Villarreal and Pinilla.

• Another great surf spot is 5 km south of Avellanas where you will find Playa Negra, reputedly one of the best surf spots in Costa Rica. It’s a right point break with very fast waves best to be surfed during transition of the tides. Only for experts.

Capitan Island (In Tamarindo)
Enjoy the beauty and unique ecosystem of Capitan Island as you explore the reefs and beach areas of the island. This unique island located in Las Baulas National Park is part of an extinct volcano and is slowly sinking.
